Are There New FMCSA Electronic Logging Devices Regulations on the Horizon?

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) submitted a notice of filing on December 10, 2015, that will mandate the use of electronic logging devices (ELDs) by interstate commercial motor vehicle drivers who currently use a driver’s log to record their hours of service.  This ruling is scheduled to be posted in the Federal Register on December 16, 2015, and will become a final rule 60 days after being posted.  The compliance deadline is currently set for December 18, 2017.

The goal of this long-awaited final rule is to strengthen compliance with commercial vehicle driver’s hours of service regulations that fall under 49 CFR Part 395.  The new rule will help reduce current paperwork requirements, but ultimately will help reduce the ability to tamper service records, helping to combat fatigue and keep our roadways safer.  The ELDs among other things record and monitor driving time, engine hours, vehicle movement and location via GPS.

The FMCSA approved and registered ELDs are scheduled to be listed on FMCSA’s website located at: https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/hours-service/elds/equipment-registration
