Common Questions About the 2012 Emergency Response Guidebook

With the 2012 version of the Emergency Response Guidebook scheduled for distribution in the next few months, we’ve naturally received quite a few questions related to when ERGs will be in stock. The following FAQ aims to answer these inquiries:

When will the ERG be ready to ship?

In short, it’s up to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), who controls the printing of the guidebooks. Subsequently, no one distributor or seller will get them sooner than anyone else. We will ship all 2012 ERGs as soon as they are available. (UPDATE 5/30:  The 2012 ERG is now projected to be available in early July 2012)

What does the ERG printing process involve?

When PHMSA is ready, it will make the ERG files available and begin soliciting bids on the book printing project. Once a bid has been selected, the U.S. Government Printing Office (GPO), which handles the actual printing of the book, will set a delivery date, typically between 45-90 days. We can begin shipping books after the GPO delivers the books.

What will the new ERG look like?

Again, the DOT has the final decision on all details of the ERG, including design, but what appears to be a preview of the cover has been posted on PHMSA’s ERG site. By and large, it follows the format of the 2008 ERG with a few small alterations.

It is expected that organization of the information contained within the book (the four color-coded sections and reference materials) will remain the same.

Do I need to switch to the new ERG once it is available?

We recommend replacing your copy of the ERG, as each edition contains an updated dangerous goods list that includes all hazardous materials added to the U.N. Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods since the last edition of the book.

I have additional questions about the ERG.
