OSHA GHS Implementation Remains in Regulatory Limbo

September has come and gone without the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) unveiling its revised Hazard Communication Standard.

As mentioned in our previous post, OSHA is in the final stages of a rule-making process that will modify the current hazard communication standard to incorporate elements of the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals, also known as the GHS. Originally slated for publication in August 2011, OSHA revised its schedule mid-summer and pushed the expected final rule publication date to September. With that time period passed, it is likely that the rule-making process could continue for several more months, probably into 2012.

Despite the delays, GHS implementation will eventually affect millions of U.S. workplaces, and there is no better time to prepare than now. Labelmaster is primed to help companies meet these proposed regulations with a complete line of GHS labels, including pictograms and personalized GHS labels. The GHS “limbo” continues. The OMB was supposed to complete its final review by January 24, 2012. Instead they have posted that the review period has been “extended” indefinitely. That means everyone will be waiting a while longer and we don’t have any indication how long.
