Technology & Dangerous Goods Compliance
Transporting goods is complex. This is especially true for chemicals and other dangerous goods, which have a number of factors to take into consideration. Transport Resource’s Abby Drexler examined these factors in her article “Everything You Need to Know About the Logistics of Bulk Chemical Transportation,” stating, “From using the proper tanks during transport, ensuring truck drivers have the necessary training and permits, and having a full knowledge of HAZMAT rules so that chemicals are properly classified as hazardous before transport, the logistics of bulk chemical transportation involves many different aspects.”
Her article nicely illustrates the complexity (and potential challenges) found throughout the transport process. It also demonstrates why companies shipping chemicals (and other dangerous goods) need to have the appropriate processes and resources in place.
This includes technology solutions. such as a transportation management systems (TMS) to automate carrier and route selection or using dangerous goods shipping software to automate the creation of documentation, obtain special permits and ensure compliance with the latest regulations, technology can help shippers better manage every step of this complex process.
It’s important for dangerous goods shippers, especially when you consider the negative impact of noncompliance can have on your organization, including shipment delays as well as fines. Drexler noted due to the regulations for transporting chemicals in the U.S., “Violations regarding packaging, labeling, employee training, and operational procedures can lead to severe penalties. Since these penalties are considered federal offenses, criminal penalties can be levied against violators, and can range from fines of $75,000 or more, jail, or prison sentences, or a combination of these penalties.”
