DG Digest: Harmonization Update to the Canada TDGR

Transport Canada published a new final rule with miscellaneous amendments to the TDGR, as well as new lithium battery guidance for consumers and an interesting research study on IBC performance.

Hopefully, everyone had an opportunity to enjoy the Independence Day holiday. And hopefully it was a safe one! July is starting out very warm, so make sure your summer heat safety plan is in full operation. Here’s the week’s regulatory news closing out June:

Transport Canada

In a major action, the Ministry has published an update to the TDG Regulations that harmonizes then with the most recent iteration of the UNMR (“Orange Book”). Among many other things this harmonization will eliminate the current discrepancy between the TDGR and other current regulatory texts regarding the size (100mm x 100mm) and phone number requirements (no more phone number) of the Lithium Battery Handling Label. There are numerous other changes as well, so if you are a shipper using the TDGR, you will definitely want to spend some time in review of this update. Find it here:

The agency published an ICR related to Intermediate Bulk Containers or IBC’s. The ICR addresses the testing, certification, and associated recordkeeping requirements for manufacturers and testers of such packagings. See this ICR here:
