DG Digest: FRA calls special meeting of its Rail Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC) to examine the train derailment in Ohio

The FRA announced a special meeting of the agency’s Rail Safety Advisory Committee (RSAC) to examine the recent derailment of a Norfolk Southern Railway (NS) train in East Palestine, Ohio. The derailment caused a significant release of hazardous materials. In this photo, a less fraught moment on the NS finds a freight train passing through rural Reddick, Illinois in May of 2015. Welcome to Daylight Savings Time! It’s “that” week again, so as HSE professionals, it’s our job to be alert for employees that may be suffering from the disjointed reaction to the change “Spring Forward” in particular can engender for some people. Let’s make sure that no one suffers and injury because they feel a little off for a few days. Meanwhile, here’s the latest regulatory news:

FRA

The agency announced a special meeting of the Rail Safety Advisory Committee, an industry group that advises FRA on such issues. This meeting, to be held March 27th, 2023, will focus on the recent derailment and subsequent release of hazardous materials in East Palestine, Ohio on the Norfolk Southern Railway. The derailment has caused a political uproar and it may be a catalyst for further regulation of hazardous materials transport by rail—only time will tell.
