US FMCSA Extends Paper Medical Certificate Retention/Carriage Date for CDL/CLP Holders

Seal_US_DOTIn the January 14th, 2014 edition of the US Federal Register, the United States Department of Transportation’s (USDOT) Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) extended by one year the requirement that holders of Commercial Driver’s Licenses (CDL) or Commercial Learner’s Permits (CLP) carry a paper copy of their Medical Examiner’s Certificate when operating a commercial motor vehicle, and that Interstate Motor Carriers retain another copy of the certificate in the Driver’s Qualification File.

FMCSA is taking this action to accommodate several state driver’s license authorities (SDLA) who have experienced delays in posting the newly required electronic attestation that the driver is subject to the physical requirements for CDL/CLP holders as well as the pertinent information from the medical examiner’s certificate to the newly operational Commercial Driver’s License Information System (CDLIS).  The January 30th deadline for drivers to self-report to their state driver’s license authority their status under the law has not been extended, nor has any extension been applied to the requirement for SDLA’s to post the information by that date.  Rather, this action is apparently being taken to accommodate administrative delays at the state level in several locations.  The new deadline for retention of paper copies of this document is January 30th, 2015.
