DG Digest: OSHA to initiate rules to protect workers from extreme heat

Welcome to November!  Hopefully, everyone had an enjoyable Halloween weekend.  November tends to be the month where most of the country starts to experience cold weather, so make sure your workplace plans for such operations are ready to go.  It’s only going to get colder for several months, so be prepared!  It was a fairly quiet regulatory week; only OSHA had fresh output. Here’s the latest news:

OSHA

The agency is initiating rulemaking to protect indoor and outdoor workers from hazardous heat and is interested in obtaining additional information about the extent and nature of hazardous heat in the workplace and the nature and effectiveness of interventions and controls used to prevent heat-related injury and illness. This announcement provides an overview of the problem of heat stress in the workplace and of measures that have been taken to prevent it. It also seeks information on issues that

OSHA can consider in developing the standard, including the scope of the standard to be produced and the types of controls that might be required. Comments are due on or before December 27, 2021. For further information and specifics about how to comment and what information to include, see more here.

The agency announced a meeting of its National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health (NACOSH).  The committee will meet Tuesday, November 16, 2021, by teleconference and WebEx from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., ET, Tuesday, November 16, 2021. See more for participation details.
