DG Digest: PHMSA, FAA Team Up on Safe Drone Transport of Hazardous Materials

Amazingly enough, here comes mid-August. One thing that means is that over the course of the next two weeks, a lot of college students will be packing up and heading back to school. And what will they be packing? Among many other things, a lot of lithium battery powered devices. Now is a good time to make sure that your kids pack them safely, and that the batteries themselves appear to be in good condition and charging and operating properly. College road trips and dorm rooms can all be a little crazy, so let’s work to eliminate lithium battery issues as one of the worries. Here’s the week’s regulatory news:

PHMSA

PHMSA and FAA will host a public meeting to solicit input on implementing provisions in the FAA Reauthorization Act of 2024 related to the transportation of hazardous materials by unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). This meeting will take place on August 22, 2024. The act directs the Secretary of Transportation to use a risk-based approach to establish the operational requirements, standards, or special permits necessary to approve or authorize an air carrier to transport hazardous materials by UAS providing common carriage under 14 Code of Federal Regulations. Find full details and how to participate here.

The agency also published its latest tranche of special permit actions. Find information about those at the links below:

OSHA

The agency published a renewed ICR dealing its lockout/tagout standard. Lockout/tagout is an important part of industrial safety programs. See the ICR here.
